Chaos erupts at Bristol Kill the Bill demo as van used to shield cops from attack
Violence breaks out during protest
Mayhem exploded at Sunday’s Kill the Bill march in Bristol, with Avon and Somerset Police caught in the thick of the disorder. Officers came under ferocious attack, prompting a dramatic response from a quick-thinking driver.
Van used as human shield amid flying missiles
One officer revealed how he smashed the van sideways to shield colleagues from flying glass bottles and fist-sized rocks hurled by rioters. “I could hear shouting and screaming as the officers were being attacked,” he said. “The only way to protect my colleagues was to place the vehicle across, side on, in front of them.”
Arrests made after attempt to torch van
Chaos intensified when a lit item was placed under the van, threatening to set the tyres ablaze. The officer described smelling burning as he was still inside. Footage captured the moment arson was attempted. Despite the danger, the van remained locked as multiple attackers tried to break in.
Police have arrested eight suspects, aged 20 to 44, on suspicion of violent disorder. One man is now charged with possession of an offensive weapon. All those held for violent disorder were released pending further enquiries.
Police hunt arson suspect
Officers have also released an image of a man they want to question in connection with the violence. The hunt is on to bring all troublemakers to justice following the brutal scenes in Bristol city centre.
