Blaze Breaks Out on Sixth Floor Flat in Lewisham

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters rushed to tackle a fierce fire on Russett Way, Lewisham. The blaze tore through a communal area on the sixth floor, but luckily, no injuries were reported.

Dramatic Rescue from Scaffolding

Station Commander Richard Hamilton revealed the fire started in an outdoor communal space off the sixth-floor lobby. Firefighters had to brave the flames and led a man and a woman to safety from scaffolding using a 9-metre ladder. About 60 residents escaped before the fire brigade arrived, while others stayed put in their unaffected flats.

Road Closures and Emergency Response

Lewisham Road was shut between Morden Hill and John Penn Street as firefighters from Greenwich, Lewisham, Deptford, Lee Green, New Cross, and nearby stations battled the blaze. The Brigade received 16 emergency calls about the fire, which broke out around 1:53 am and was under control by 2:50 am.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Both the London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service have launched an investigation.
