Criminology Graduate Jailed for 15 Years After Armed Robbery Spree
Kudakwashe Chowa, a former criminology student, has been slapped with a 15-year prison sentence for a shocking series of 18 armed robberies across Birmingham and the Black Country. The 30-year-old terrorised banks, supermarkets, convenience stores, and petrol stations, threatening staff at knifepoint and once brandishing a gun during a brazen hold-up.
£3,500 Stolen in Brazen Crime Spree
Chowa’s ruthless robbery rampage spanned from February to October last year, hitting locations across Birmingham, Solihull, Dudley, and Tipton. He pleaded guilty to six armed robberies at Birmingham Crown Court on August 7, but also confessed to 12 more offences, taking the total to 18.
- Targets included a One-Stop in Solihull, Londis in Rubery, Spar in Cotteridge
- Chowa struck a service station on Alcester Road, Birmingham twice within days
The total loot? Over £3,500 in stolen cash, snatched through threats and violent intimidation.
Police Catch Crook After Gunpoint Bank Raid
Chowa’s crime spree ended after a daring gunpoint robbery at a Lloyds Bank. Extensive CCTV footage captured the act, helping police identify and track him down. He tried to launder the stolen cash back into his own bank account, but the law caught up fast.
The arrest was a joint effort by robbery squads, forensic teams, operational support units, firearms officers, and local police, all working relentlessly to stop the armed thug.
Detective Highlights Crook’s Chilling Calculations
“Chowa had attended a university course in criminology. This would provide him with knowledge of police and forensic tactics. He was brazen in his approach, but his luck finally ran out,” said Detective Sergeant Curt Wilkins of Sutton Coldfield’s robbery team.
Wilkins added that Chowa’s sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes and the lasting trauma inflicted on his victims.
