Former GP Robert Cameron Wells Convicted of Horrific Child Sex Offences

A disgraced ex-doctor has been found guilty of a string of sickening sexual offences against five young victims dating back 19 to 25 years. Robert Cameron Wells, 69, was convicted at Hove Crown Court on 27 July following a chilling investigation across Brighton, West Sussex, Hampshire, and the West Midlands.

Shocking Details of Abuse Unveiled

Wells pleaded not guilty to two counts of indecency with an eight-year-old boy and attempting to possess indecent images of a child from 1998. However, he admitted to 16 other horrific crimes, including:

  • Indecent assault on a 15-year-old girl during a so-called ‘pre-abortion’ medical exam at his Portslade surgery (1998)
  • Indecent assault on an 18-year-old woman in Coventry (2002)
  • Two rapes and seven indecent assaults on a nine-year-old girl between Brighton and the West Midlands (2001), plus four counts of taking indecent photos of her
  • Indecent assault on another 18-year-old woman in Southampton (2002)

New video evidence emerged thanks to technological advances, further condemning Wells, who had previously been convicted for abuse of the same girl in Hampshire back in 2004.

Grotesque Abuse Involving Drugs and Coercion

The court heard Wells used drugs to control his victims. In one chilling incident, he gave a “white tablet” to a boy at a birthday party, earning the boy’s trust by claiming his doctor status. The boy was then taken to an industrial site where he was forced to abuse a sedated girl tied to a bed – all recorded by a second man behind a camera.

“He told the boy he would be the star, like an actor in a film,” the court was told.

The boy was also sexually assaulted during this episode. Despite police interviewing a man suspected of involvement, insufficient evidence means no charges were filed.

Long History of Abuse and Justice Served

Wells was already serving multiple prison sentences for offences in Hampshire and South Wales before this latest conviction. Once a GP in Brighton and Hove, he was struck off the medical register after a 2004 conviction that handed him 15 years. In 2017, he was sentenced to seven years for further indecent assaults on young girls in Cardiff.

Detective Constable Owen Watkins blasted Wells as “a systematic and serial sexual abuser” who exploited his professional status to prey on vulnerable youths.

“Only one victim was abused while he was acting as a doctor. But all knew him through work or family and were manipulated by his position,” said DC Watkins.

“His appalling crimes span decades. It’s reassuring his victims and the community know he can no longer harm anyone.”

The victims showed remarkable courage throughout the trial, with one brave man in his thirties giving vital evidence in court.

Sussex Police emphasise there are no current safeguarding concerns related to this case. For advice on reporting sexual offences, visit the Sussex Police website.

Wells will be sentenced on 6 September at Hove Crown Court.
