Ex-Cop Jailed for Sexually Assaulting Child on Duty
Dean Dempster, 35, a former Manchester police officer, has been locked up for nine years after sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl while on duty. The disgraced cop was sacked earlier this year and must now sign the sex offenders’ register for life.
Shocking Abuse of Trust During Domestic Call
On December 29, 2023, Dempster was one of three officers responding to a domestic incident in Oldham involving children. Instead of protecting the vulnerable six-year-old girl, he took her aside and abused her. His supervisor confronted him the very next day after a complaint was made. He was arrested immediately and has since admitted multiple offences.
Multiple Offences Exposed in Police Probe
- Six counts of making indecent images of children, including two of the most serious Category A.
- Two counts of misconduct in public office for abusing his police powers and using bodycam footage for personal gratification.
- Further footage found on his devices involving other children at past incidents dating back to 2022.
Authorities launched a thorough investigation led by the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Thousands of his previous deployments were scrutinised, with no further offences uncovered so far. Officials encourage anyone affected to come forward.
Police Chief Condemns ‘Depraved’ Officer
Deputy Chief Constable Terry Woods said:
“I am angry and appalled at this abhorrent abuse of responsibility and trust. We commend the bravery of this young victim for coming forward. We apologise to her family and know nothing will ever undo the harm Dempster has caused.”
“Dempster represents the very worst of society. He is not a police officer; he is a child sex offender and a criminal who has no right to wear a police uniform or serve the public.”
“Our vetting showed no signs of warning. Dempster is a depraved exception who we have wasted no time in dismissing and disowning.”
“The thousands of officers he has let down remain committed to protecting children in Oldham and Greater Manchester. Anyone who undermines this has no place in GMP.”
Dempster will serve five years on licence after his prison term. He was dismissed by the Chief Constable at the earliest opportunity in May 2024 and is now barred from policing for life.
