HMRC Fraud Bust: 50 Officers Raid Four Homes in Cross-Country Blitz

More than 50 HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officers swooped in simultaneous raids across Harrogate, Torquay, London, and Kent on October 11, 2022. The crackdown targeted a sinister fraud and money laundering ring using stolen taxpayer identities.

Phones, Computers Seized as Fraudsters Face the Music

Four residential properties were raided. Officers seized over 20 phones, plus several computers and tablets. The suspects allegedly used taxpayers’ details to carry out bogus Self Assessment and VAT repayment scams, hitting HMRC hard. Social media was their hunting ground, luring innocent victims into the fraud.

Details of the Four Arrested

  • 24-year-old man from Beckenham, Kent – charged with fraud by false representation and money laundering.
  • 30-year-old man from Harrogate, Yorkshire – arrested for fraud and money laundering.
  • 28-year-old man from Torquay – nabbed over the same offences.
  • 25-year-old man from London – also arrested for fraud and money laundering.

HMRC Warns Public: Protect Your Personal Info!

Peter Vivian, Assistant Director of HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service, said:

“This is a calculated criminal attack using hijacked personal information from innocent members of the public.”

“Don’t share your bank details, Government Gateway logins, or National Insurance numbers.”

“Fraudsters use stolen identities to claim fake tax repayments, potentially saddling you with debts you must repay.”

“Banks may close accounts linked to fraud without warning, making it tough to open new accounts or get credit.”

“These criminals share stolen identities widely, making it hard to reclaim your personal data.”

“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

If anyone contacts you online or face-to-face offering cash in exchange for your details, don’t fall for it. Only deal with HMRC directly or your officially appointed tax agent.
