Gunshots and Cannabis Raid Shake Southampton Street
Just after 1am on September 5, 2019, gunshots rang out in a quiet Southampton street. Police rushed to the scene and found a massive cannabis stash at a nearby address — plus bags of the Class B drug dumped outside.
Four Arrested and Jailed Over Cannabis Factory Heist
On November 24, 2020, four burglars were handed a combined 25 years behind bars at Southampton Crown Court. The gang admitted targeting a cannabis factory disguised as a flat in River Walk, hoping to snag the drugs for profit.
The Jail Terms
- Fardeen Hamidy, 26 (Bursledon Road): Eight years, eight months for conspiracy to burgle and possession of a firearm with intent.
- Christy Flaherty, 27 (Southampton): Eight years for conspiracy to burgle, firearm possession, and involvement in cocaine supply.
- Robert Johnston, 25 (Tennyson Avenue): Five years, four months for burglary conspiracy and firearm possession.
- Ken Mulangala, 18 (Barking, Essex): Three years for conspiracy to commit burglary.
Terrified Residents and a Violent Crime Scene
Locals reported hearing gunfire during the botched burglary, which ended with cannabis bags abandoned in the street. The gang fled empty-handed but couldn’t escape Hampshire Constabulary’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit, who tracked them down.
“This case highlights the violence and harm associated with drug supply,” police said. “What happened on River Walk was terrifying for residents who heard gunshots in their neighbourhood.”
Police Plea to the Community
Authorities warn that drug cultivation and supply fuels serious violence and devastates local communities. They urge anyone spotting suspicious or drug-related activity to come forward and help keep neighbourhoods safe.
