Conman Cheats Elderly Widow Out of £105k in Cold-Blooded Scam

A ruthless fraudster conned a wealthy elderly widow out of more than £100,000, a court heard this week. Andrew Amdur, 48, from Kingsgate Avenue, was found guilty of two counts of fraud and one of theft after an eight-day trial at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, 10 April.

Smooth-Talking Scammer Plays Victim

In the months leading up to September 2017, Amdur wormed his way into the widow’s trust after meeting her while walking her dog. He spun a tale about walking his brother’s dog and being an opera singer to gain sympathy.

He convinced her to transfer huge sums of money, claiming it was for entertainment costs and charity. But none of the cash went to charity – instead, Amdur blew it on gambling and personal expenses.

Bank Transfers and a Fake Harp Purchase

  • On 28 August 2017, Amdur took a call from the victim’s bank to divert an £80,000 transfer.
  • He later withdrew £25,000 from her account on 21 September.
  • The money was disguised as payment for a harp purchase and operatic performances at the victim’s home.

Amdur claimed the cash was owed to him for wages and performances – a story police quickly uncovered as a sham.

Arrest and Justice Loom

The Westminster CID swooped after the victim raised the alarm in September 2017. Officers arrested Amdur two days later and questioned him thoroughly in 2018 before charging him.

Detective Sergeant Richard Kidd, who led the investigation, said: “Andrew Amdur took advantage of the victim’s kind nature. Thanks to police work and community help, this case is now closed. The victim was unaware her money was being squandered. I hope this conviction brings her some comfort and closure.”

Amdur faces sentencing on Friday, 10 May at Southwark Crown Court.
