Bootle Fraudster Busted for Beating Bookies Out of Thousands

A cunning conman has been locked up after ripping off bookmakers nationwide by hacking gaming machines and smuggling thousands in cash. Michael Shaw, 39, from Aylward Place in Bootle, was sentenced to 16 months in Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday, March 15.

Shaw’s Social Media Brags Blow His Cover

Shaw didn’t just commit the crimes—he flaunted them online. Videos on his social media showed him boasting, “I beat the bookies, not a lot of people can say that.” One cheeky post was uploaded just hours before he faced the judge. His digital arrogance helped police nail him.

Accomplice Also Jailed

Joining Shaw behind bars is Paul Shaw, 40, also from Aylward Place, Bootle. He received a 12-month jail term for his role in the fraud spree.

Fraud Wave Hit Bookies Across UK

  • The crimes took place from September 2017 to April 2018.
  • Shaw hacked into betting machines to make fake bets and cash out illegally.
  • Merseyside Police found 21 fraud cases linked to Shaw in the region alone.

Detective Constable Sarah Clayton said: “Shaw shamelessly committed numerous fraud offences that affected several businesses across the UK. He believed he was above the law by posting videos online and boasting about his actions which cost him a custodial sentence.”

“I hope this result shows that Merseyside Police are relentless in pursuing people like Shaw who commit fraud and are determined in bringing them to justice.”

“We will use all of our resources to prevent such crimes that not only affects organisations but the people that work for them who are just doing their jobs and were ultimately impacted by Shaw’s actions.”

“I would encourage anyone who believes that they may be a victim of fraud to contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.”
