Hainault Sword Rampage: Man Convicted of Murdering Teen in Brutal Attack

A chilling sword attack in Hainault has ended in tragedy after a 14-year-old boy was killed and four others seriously injured. Marcos Arduini-Monzo, 37, has been convicted at the Old Bailey for murder and multiple violent offences following a savage rampage on 30 April 2024.

Man Convicted of Murder and Multiple Charges

Arduini-Monzo was found guilty of:

  • Murder of Daniel Anjorin, a 14-year-old schoolboy ambushed on his way to school
  • Three counts of attempted murder
  • Aggravated burglary
  • Two counts of wounding with intent
  • Possession of a bladed article

The attacks, brutal and unprovoked, unfolded in the early morning hours, leaving the local community in shock.

Drug-Induced Psychosis, Not Mental Illness, Behind Attack

Prosecutors argued Arduini-Monzo’s rampage was triggered by a drug-induced psychotic episode, caused by excessive cannabis use—not a recognised mental illness like schizophrenia.

Kirsty O’Connor of the Crown Prosecution Service said:

“The CPS maintained throughout that Arduini-Monzo’s mental state was driven by his own cannabis misuse which meant that he was fully responsible for the devastation he caused. The jury, by their unequivocal verdicts, have accepted the prosecution case.”

“Our hearts go out to Daniel Anjorin’s family and friends who have suffered his unimaginable loss in horrific circumstances, and our thoughts remain with all of the victims who continue to recover from their injuries and trauma.”

Rampage Details: 20 Minutes of Terror

The violence erupted in just 20 minutes, beginning around 7am. Arduini-Monzo deliberately drove into his first victim before launching a ferocious sword attack.

  • He fatally stabbed Daniel Anjorin as the boy walked to school in his sports kit.
  • He attacked paramedics trying to reach the wounded teenager, blocking life-saving aid.
  • He severely injured a female police officer.
  • He broke into a family home, assaulting a couple as their four-year-old child slept nearby.
  • Another police officer was hurt in a garage block confrontation before Arduini-Monzo was disarmed and arrested.

Police Heroes Praised for Bravery

CPS spokesperson Kirsty O’Connor paid tribute to the emergency responders who risked their lives to stop the killer.

“The courage shown by PC Mechem-Whitfield, PC King, Inspector Campbell and others was exceptional and undoubtedly prevented further loss of life. We all owe them a debt of gratitude.”

CPS: No Diminished Responsibility Defence

Chief Crown Prosecutor Jaswant Narwal explained the conviction hinged on proving the psychosis was self-induced through drug misuse.

“By proving Arduini-Monzo’s psychosis was the result of his own actions, our prosecutors could bring charges of murder, rather than manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.”

Sentencing Date Set

Marcos Arduini-Monzo will be sentenced on Friday, 27 June at the Old Bailey.
