Man Arrested After Tragic Crash Claims Young Mum and Baby’s Lives
A man has been arrested following a fatal crash on Friday, May 31, that took the lives of a young mother and her eight-month-old baby boy.
Horror on A1(M): Baby and Mum Killed
Little Zackary Blades, just eight months old, and his 30-year-old mother Karlene Warner were driving on the A1(M) between Chester-le-Street and Durham when their Peugeot 308 was slammed by an Audi Q5 in the early hours. The devastating collision left both Zackary and Karlene with fatal injuries.
Zackary’s mother, Shalorna Warner, was behind the wheel at the time. She suffered minor injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Family Heartbroken as They Pay Tribute to Zackary
“We are absolutely heartbroken to announce the tragic death of our beautiful son, Zackary,” said Shalorna and Zackary’s father, Jack Blades. “Though we only had you in our arms for eight months, you brought immeasurable happiness to our lives.”
“We shared countless precious moments as a family—memories that will forever be etched in our hearts. Thank you for giving us the best Christmas and holiday together.”
Zackary was a joyful, active baby who had just started crawling and saying “mama.” His first teeth had come through, and he was beginning to stand—milestones tragically cut short.
“Our little Zack—mammy and daddy love you so much,” Shalorna added. “You didn’t deserve any of this. You were such a happy, cheeky boy. Our hearts ache, and we will never forget you.”
Remembering Karlene and Her Daughter
The tragedy doesn’t end with Zackary. Karlene Warner leaves behind a young daughter, Everly, and is deeply mourned by family and friends.
“How do we put into words the void left by their absence?” Shalorna said. “We miss you so much, and we always will. Rest in peace, our gorgeous little boy, Zackary William Blades. And Karlene, may you find eternal peace as well.”
Police Arrest and Charges
The 38-year-old driver of the Audi was arrested at the scene. He now faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving and possession of a bladed article.
He appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court this morning as the investigation continues.
