Heartless Bully Caught After Terrorising Neighbour for Cash
A cruel thug repeatedly bullied his vulnerable neighbour, threatening violence unless handed over his savings. Scott Steanson left his victim shaken after turning up uninvited at his door time and time again, demanding money.
Violent Attack Shocks Community
On one chilling occasion, Steanson and his accomplice Liam Smith brutally attacked the man. They punched him in the face and even bit his ear before forcing him to withdraw cash. The victim, a man in his 50s, stayed silent out of fear — until a concerned friend spotted his injuries in January and urged him to speak out.
Justice Served at Newcastle Crown Court
Steanson, 33, has admitted eight counts of blackmail and one count of assault. Smith, 28, pleaded guilty to assault. Both men from Gateshead are now remanded in custody, awaiting sentencing on September 13 at Newcastle Crown Court.
Detective Praises Victim’s Bravery
“Steanson’s relentless bullying of a vulnerable neighbour is shocking,” said Detective Constable Mark Turnbull, who led the investigation. “His year-long campaign of threats and violence was designed to keep the victim too scared to speak out.”
“Protecting the vulnerable is our top priority. No one should feel unsafe in their own home. I’m proud we secured convictions against these thugs.”
“I pay tribute to the victim’s bravery and the key witnesses whose help was crucial. They should be proud for helping bring these criminals to justice.”
“There have been many acts of kindness in the North East recently, and we urge communities to keep looking out for each other. Meanwhile, we will keep cracking down on those who exploit others.”
