Two Men Nabbed After Hair-Raising High-Speed Chase Through Brighton Streets
Wild Ride Through Brighton
Two men were arrested following a breathless police chase through Brighton on Sunday, January 5. Cops spotted a silver Volkswagen Golf, suspected to be stolen, tearing through city streets at reckless speeds.
The drama unfolded at around 6:20 p.m. when officers tried to pull over the vehicle. Instead of stopping, the driver slammed the accelerator, speeding over 60 mph in 20 mph zones, blasting through red lights, and even driving into oncoming traffic. The chase raced through Queens Park and Hanover, turning the city’s roads into a dangerous obstacle course.
Pursuit Ends in Arrest
The wild ride climaxed on Albion Hill, continuing into Grove Hill where police from the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) and Tactical Firearms Unit (TFU) finally brought the vehicle to a halt. A passenger tried to make a run for it but was quickly caught. Both men were detained on the spot.
Serious Charges for Brighton and Hove Men
- The 37-year-old Brighton driver faces numerous offences: dangerous driving, vehicle theft, failing to stop, and drug-related charges.
- The 21-year-old passenger from Hove stands accused of knowingly riding in a stolen vehicle and drug offences.
Both men have been bailed as police continue their investigation.
Inspector Praises Officers’ Swift Response
Inspector Matt Wightwick of the Roads Policing Unit said: “This was a high-speed pursuit which posed a high risk to the public in Brighton. Officers were able to safely stop the vehicle and make the arrests before anyone could be seriously harmed. With the support of colleagues from TFU, they showed great teamwork to safely resolve the short pursuit.”
He added, “It demonstrates the professionalism and determination of officers to catch serious offenders on our roads.”
