Ex-Senator Jailed Over Chilling Organ Harvest Plot

Senator Ike Ekweremadu, 60, his wife Beatrice, 56, and middleman Dr Obinna Obeta, 51, were hauled into court and convicted at the Old Bailey this March. Their crime? Orchestrating a chilling modern slavery scandal involving organ trafficking.

Kidney for a Price: Exploiting the Vulnerable

The victim was a desperate Lagos street trader, brought to the UK under false pretences. His kidney was to be taken for Ekweremadu’s 25-year-old daughter, Sonia, in a disturbing £80,000 transplant plan at the Royal Free Hospital that was halted last year.

Terrified for his life, the victim fled to police exactly a year ago, revealing the grim plot that exploited his poverty for the family’s gain.

Judge Slams ‘Despicable’ Human Trafficking

“People trafficking across international borders for the harvesting of human organs is a form of slavery,” declared Mr Justice Johnson during sentencing. “It regards humans and their body parts as commodities that can be bought and sold. It preys on poverty, misery, and desperation.”

The judge condemned the trio, jailing Ike Ekweremadu for nine years and eight months, warning that the victim risked a lifetime with one kidney and no aftercare.

Investigation Ongoing as Police Warn Public

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy praised the victim’s bravery and confirmed this was the UK’s first conviction under the Modern Slavery Act for organ harvesting. The inquiry continues, with Scotland Yard hinting at more charges to come.

He urged the public to stay vigilant against modern slavery in all forms. “Whether in nail bars, car washes or the sex trade, if you suspect someone is being controlled or exploited, report it. Your tip could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.”

The Sinister Family Plot

  • The Ekweremadus tried to fake a family link between the victim and Sonia to deceive hospital staff.
  • The victim was lured by promises of £7,000 and a better life in the UK.
  • A forged declaration was produced after the transplant failed, falsely claiming biological ties.
  • Sonia was acquitted and watched from the public gallery as her parents were sentenced.

While donating a kidney is legal in the UK, payments for organs are banned. This case exposed a ruthless scheme that preyed on the vulnerable for selfish gain.
