Fiji Rugby Star Locked Up for Sex Attacks in Cardiff
Api Ratuniyarawa, 37, a Fiji international rugby ace, has been jailed for nearly three years after admitting a string of sexual assaults in Cardiff. The offences happened just days before a high-profile Wales vs Barbarians match at the Principality Stadium last November.
Attacks Rock Cardiff Bars Ahead of Big Game
Ratuniyarawa targeted three teenage girls in Cardiff bars between October 31 and November 2. He pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault. Two further sexual assault charges were left on file. The incidents unfolded while the star was socialising in the VIP area of the Revolution bar on consecutive nights.
Judge Slams Athlete’s ‘Aggravated’ Crimes
At Cardiff Crown Court last December, prosecutor Heath Edwards revealed Ratuniyarawa’s shocking behaviour came in the run-up to the rugby clash, where he was set to play for the Barbarians. Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke handed down a sentence of two years and ten months behind bars.
Ratuniyarawa faces severe consequences beyond prison, including a decade-long placement on the sex offenders register and a three-year restraining order protecting one victim.
Jury Hits Athlete with Tough Sentence Despite Remorse
The judge acknowledged the trauma inflicted on the victims, stating alcohol had a “significant aggravating effect” on the assaults, causing both physical and emotional harm. While noting Ratuniyarawa’s lack of previous convictions, good character, and genuine remorse, the judge stressed the seriousness of his crimes.
