Shanklin Drink Driver Dives into River Medina – Magistrates Show Mercy
Lucy Wilton, 29, a Shanklin estate agent, narrowly escaped death after her car smashed through a bridge barrier and plunged into the River Medina last month. She appeared before Isle of Wight Magistrates in Newport this morning facing serious drink-driving charges.
Four Times Over the Limit
Emergency crews had to haul Wilton from the river after her Vauxhall Corsa veered off the road and crashed into the water. Court heard she was caught with a blood alcohol level four times the legal limit – a shocking level of recklessness.
Lucky to Be Alive
Magistrate Ann Evans didn’t hold back: “You were lucky not to have been seriously injured or killed — or worse still, how close you were to killing someone.” Witnesses’ quick actions at the scene likely saved Wilton’s life.
Sentenced but Lenient
Wilton was handed an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, alongside a £200 fine. She also received a lengthy driving ban of 32 months. The message is clear: drink-driving carries deadly risks, and the law is watching.
