James Hardy, 37, aka ‘Spunky’ on the streets of Whitby, has been locked up after pleading guilty at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on May 23, 2022. He faced two serious charges: possession with intent to supply 20 wraps of crack cocaine in December 2020, and 11 wraps of heroin in February 2021.

Hardy’s operation was tied to notorious county lines drug dealer Emma Seed, who was slammed with an 11 years and nine months sentence this March for flooding the area with heroin and cocaine. Both investigations ran in parallel, revealing a tangled web of drug crime threatening the community.

Detective Constable Steve Monty praised the collaborative effort between 1 and Ryedale CID detectives, supported by the Operational Support Unit’s thorough searches of homes and vehicles. The Digital Forensics Unit played a key role, analysing phones and digital devices that sealed Hardy’s fate.
“We secured irrefutable evidence showing James Hardy ran a significant Class A drug dealing ring linked to Emma Seed’s county line,” said DC Monty. “He had no choice but to admit guilt.”

Detectives acknowledged Whitby residents’ frustration with drug-related crime and urged continued vigilance. Thanks to locals and businesses reporting suspicious activity—even anonymously via Crimestoppers—police have struck a major blow against dealers.
