Paedophile Faces Over 10 Years for Horrific Child Abuse in Edenbridge

A vile paedophile who tormented and raped a young child in Edenbridge is set to spend at least a decade behind bars. Andrew Gibbs, 53, from High Street, Uckfield, launched a brutal campaign of abuse between 2006 and 2008, using threats to keep his victim silent.

Relentless Abuse Hidden for Years

Kent Police stepped in after receiving allegations on 19 October 2016. Their investigation uncovered multiple instances of Gibbs targeting the child, forcing them to watch pornography and threatening further attacks if anyone spoke out.

Officers swooped on 3 November 2016, raiding Gibbs’ former Edenbridge home in Moles Mead. They seized computers and digital devices, uncovering a sick stash of nearly 100 indecent images depicting the worst child abuse imaginable. Gibbs had even tried to cover his tracks using computer cleaner software.

Chilling Charges, Guilty Verdict

Gibbs faced a daunting list of charges at Maidstone Crown Court: two counts of child rape, two attempted rapes, sexual assault, incitement to sexual activity, and making indecent photographs of a child. Despite initially pleading not guilty, a jury found him guilty of all counts on 14 May 2018.

Recorder Mark Weekes nailed it: “These are horrifying offences and it will be a substantial sentence in double digits.” Gibbs was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 28 June.

Justice for Victim, Warning for Others

“Gibbs targeted and repeatedly abused a very young child in some of the most abhorrent ways imaginable,” said Detective Sergeant David Turner of Kent’s Vulnerable Investigations Team. “His crimes brought unimaginable trauma to the victim and their family, who had to endure a gruelling trial. Thankfully, he’s now behind bars where he can do no more harm.”

Detective Turner added: “This case shows it is never too late to report sexual offences. We treat all information with the utmost confidence and sensitivity.”
