Massive Crackdown on Drunk and Drug Drivers Kicks Off This Monday

Kent Police launch a nationwide enforcement blitz from Monday, August 22, 2022, targeting reckless drivers who put lives at risk.

24/7 Road Checks to Nab Dangerous Drivers

Officers will patrol day and night, hunting down motorists suspected of drink-driving, drug-driving, and other serious motoring offences. They’re teaming up with partner agencies to clamp down hard on lawbreakers.

Police have the powers to stop vehicles, carry out breath tests, and roadside drug swabs. If caught, expect swift prosecution with heavy penalties.

Chief Inspector Warns: “Leave Your Keys at Home if You Drink”

“Summer means more socialising, but if you plan to drink, please leave your car keys at home,” said Chief Inspector Craig West of the Roads Policing Unit. “Too often, people take risks that just aren’t worth it.”

In June alone, police arrested 111 people for drunk driving and 63 for drug driving. These offences, alongside speeding, ignoring seatbelts, and using phones, cause serious and fatal crashes in Kent.

Driving Under Influence: A Deadly Gamble

Drinking or taking drugs behind the wheel not only threatens your life but endangers passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians. And it’s entirely avoidable.

Kent Police backs Kent County Council’s Vision Zero strategy — a partnership focused on slashing road deaths and life-changing injuries through education, enforcement, and prevention.

“You might think you’re fine to drive, but even a little alcohol can impair your judgement,” added Inspector West. “One small mistake can have catastrophic consequences. We’ll keep up enforcement and awareness, but everyone needs to play their part.”

How to Stay Safe and Stay Legal

  • Plan your night out. Set aside cash for a taxi or nominate a sober driver.
  • Remember: alcohol stays in your system long after the last drink. Don’t risk it driving the next morning.
  • There’s no safe alcohol level when driving. If you drink, use alternative transport.
  • Penalties are harsh: up to six months in prison, unlimited fines, and a driving ban for drink-driving offences.
  • Causing death while under the influence can send you to jail for up to 14 years.

Don’t gamble with lives. If you drink or take drugs, don’t drive. It’s that simple.
