National Crackdown on Dangerous Driving Kicks Off
From Monday, August 22, 2022, police across the UK will ramp up patrols to catch drivers putting lives at risk. Officers will be on the lookout 24/7 for motorists driving under the influence and committing other illegal acts behind the wheel.
Strict Roadside Checks and Zero Tolerance
Police have the power to stop vehicles, administer breath tests, and perform roadside drug swabs. Anyone caught breaking the law faces tough prosecution.
Chief Inspector Craig West of the Roads Policing Unit warned: “Summer means more socialising, but if you plan to drink, leave your car keys at home. Too often, we see people taking risks that aren’t worth it.”
Shocking Stats and Deadly Consequences
- In June 2022 alone, there were 111 drunk driving arrests and 63 drug-driving arrests.
- Offences like drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, speeding, and using phones cause many serious and fatal crashes.
Driving under the influence endangers drivers, passengers, and innocent road users. It is a completely avoidable risk that ruins lives.
Plan Ahead or Pay the Price

Here’s the official advice:
- Plan your night out: set aside cash for a taxi or appoint a sober driver.
- Remember alcohol stays in your system—don’t risk driving the next morning.
- There is NO safe amount of alcohol for drivers; always choose alternative transport if you drink.
Penalties are harsh. Driving over the limit can mean up to six months in jail, unlimited fines, and a hefty driving ban. Causing death while intoxicated can land you up to 14 years behind bars.
