Kent Cop Found Guilty of Rape, Stalking and Bugging Victim’s Home
A serving Kent police officer has been slammed by a court after being found guilty of a string of horrific crimes. Clive Garton, 56, stationed at Sittingbourne, was convicted of rape, perverting the course of justice, and stalking at Lewes Crown Court on Wednesday, 2 May 2018.
Shocking Abuse Behind Closed Doors
The court heard Garton’s victim endured years of torment before the brutal attack. On 22 October 2016, after an argument at her home, Garton was meant to leave. Instead, he approached the woman as she sat on the stairs and raped her despite her desperate pleas for him to stop.
Even after the assault, Garton stayed and tried to convince the victim to withdraw her police report, promising to meet her demands if she dropped charges.
Years of Stalking and Surveillance
The chilling details didn’t stop there. Garton had been stalking the victim for years. He planted hidden listening devices disguised as plug sockets around her home and used SIM cards to eavesdrop on her private conversations.
He also tracked her mobile phone to monitor her every move. Shockingly, he continued to attempt tracking her while on bail.
Jury Rejects Cop’s Lies
Despite claiming the sex was consensual, Garton admitted to bugging the victim’s home. Police found two covert devices during a search.
The jury was left in no doubt and handed down a guilty verdict. Garton was immediately suspended and remains in custody. Sentencing is set for 6 June 2018.
Kent Police Praise Victim’s Courage
Superintendent Nick Gossett praised the victim’s bravery: “She has endured years of coercive and controlling behaviour at the hands of Garton and I hope the verdict will allow her the opportunity to move forward with her life.”
He added: “This case shows how seriously we treat stalking and rape. If you’re suffering, please come forward. You will be taken seriously and support is available.”
