Lewisham Man Gets 20 Years for Major Cocaine Smuggling Plot

Ryan Steadman, 39, from Lewisham, has been slapped with a 20-year prison sentence for his role in a massive cocaine smuggling ring that exploited corrupt Gatwick baggage handlers. The gang hauled millions in drugs from Brazil to the UK, using sneaky tactics at the airport to dodge detection.

How the Smuggling Scheme Worked

The clever operation saw couriers ferrying suitcases packed with cocaine on Air Europa flights from Brazil through Madrid to Gatwick. Upon arrival, the couriers walked off without collecting their luggage. That’s when the corrupt baggage handlers stepped in to smuggle the illegal cargo out.

Judge Christopher Grout revealed the gang smuggled over 50kg of cocaine, worth up to a staggering £5.2 million, between February 2020 and November 2021. When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their cocaine shipments, they even plotted to shift to heroin via corrupt DHL parcel couriers—a plan that thankfully never took off.

Gang Leaders Sentenced After Nine-Week Trial

Steadman and his co-conspirators were found guilty last week for conspiring to import cocaine and heroin. Tyrone Gordon, 40, from Crawley, was convicted of possession with intent to supply and offering to supply cocaine. Gordon, identified as the gang’s ringleader with South American links, landed a hefty 26-year sentence for conspiracy to import cocaine, another 26 years for heroin conspiracy, plus 14 and nine years for supply charges—all running concurrently.

Judge Grout blasted their actions: “Class A drugs destroy lives—not just users and dealers, but their families and entire communities. Your crimes have caused massive misery, fueling theft, robbery, and countless other harms.”

Luxury Watches Bought with Drug Cash

Gordon confessed that two Rolex watches he owned were bought with drug money. Steadman, heavily involved in organising drug deals on a commercial scale, received 20 years for cocaine conspiracy and 20 years for heroin conspiracy, also to run concurrently. Both men will serve half their sentences behind bars before possible release on licence.

A third gang member, Jack Williams—the link to the corrupt baggage staff—has admitted his role and faces sentencing soon.
