Life behind bars for Isle of Wight killer Cameron Baker
Brutal stabbing shocks Ryde community
Cameron Baker, 28, from Sandown, Isle of Wight, has been handed life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years for the savage stabbing of 30-year-old Thomas Barton in Ryde this May. The victim, a devoted dad from Brading, was fatally attacked after confronting Baker over a personal dispute involving his ex-girlfriend.
How the deadly attack unfolded
At Winchester Crown Court, it was revealed that the fatal assault happened in the early hours of May 28 on Park Road, Ryde. Thomas Barton, described as a “caring, kind” man, challenged Baker when he saw him holding hands with Sammi Creed, his former partner. What followed was a swift and brutal attack that ended tragically for Barton.
Claims of self-defence fall flat
Baker, from Leed Street, tried to dodge full blame by claiming self-defence, insisting the killing happened during a scuffle. The jury, however, saw through his defence and found him guilty of murder, condemning the senseless violence.
Family and police fury
Thomas’s father, 84-year-old Peter Thomas, said his son was “looking for a fight” that night. Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Douglas branded the attack a “senseless and despicable act of violence”. She urged the local community to stay alert against knife crime and report any suspicious behaviour to prevent further tragedies.
Community in shock
The Isle of Wight is left reeling after losing Thomas “Tommy” Barton, remembered fondly for his kindness. Cameron Baker’s sentencing is a grim reminder of the brutal consequences of knife crime and the urgent need to tackle violence head-on in towns like Ryde.
