Teen Jailed for Life Over Party Murder of 17-Year-Old Charlie Cosser
Stabbing Shocks Sussex Partygoers
A 17-year-old has been locked up for life after fatally stabbing teenager Charlie Cosser at a party in Sussex. Yura Varybrus attacked Charlie in Warnham’s Marches Lane just after midnight on July 22. Charlie, from Milford in Surrey, tragically died in hospital three days later, leaving his family heartbroken.
Family Devastated by “Evil and Cowardly” Act
Charlie’s parents, Martin and Tara Cosser, along with siblings Adam and Eloise, expressed their anguish. Martin said: “Our lives have been destroyed by the tragic and unnecessary loss of our son.” The family vowed to keep Charlie’s memory alive through their charity, Charlie’s Promise, which fights knife crime.
“Our son Charlie was just 17 when he went to that party and never came home. Varybrus’s evil act robbed him of a bright future. We will ensure Charlie is never forgotten.”
Life Sentence and Knife Crime Warning
Found guilty of murder and possession of a bladed article at Brighton Law Courts in May, Varybrus was sentenced on June 19 by Judge Christine Henson KC. He must serve a minimum of 16 years before parole can be considered.
Detective Chief Inspector Kimball Edey of Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: “This devastating crime has affected many young lives. We thank the community and witnesses for their support, which was crucial to achieving justice for Charlie.”
He warned: “Carrying a knife puts you, your friends and family in danger. Please don’t.” The case highlights the deadly consequences of bringing knives to social gatherings.
