A 53-year-old man has been arrested after a car ploughed into crowds celebrating Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade on Water Street.

The shocking crash happened just after 6pm on Monday, May 26, leaving 27 people hospitalised, including four children. Two victims, one a child, suffered serious injuries.

Police have ruled out terrorism, calling it a “horrific but isolated event.”

Council Leader Condemns Incident

Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson branded the event “appalling.” He said:

“It has cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day for the city and the finale to a fabulous bank holiday weekend.”

Robinson thanked emergency services and urged the public not to share distressing footage online, advising people to forward it directly to the police.

Emergency Services: Rapid Response Saves Lives

Dave Kitchin from North West Ambulance Service confirmed their paramedics, including a cyclist paramedic who was struck but unharmed, acted swiftly.

  • Victims taken to Royal Liverpool, Alder Hey, Arrowe Park, and Aintree University Hospitals.
  • St John’s Ambulance, air ambulances, and Hazardous Area Response Teams were already in place due to parade preparations.

Nick Searle, Merseyside Fire and Rescue, revealed crews arrived within four minutes, lifting the vehicle to free three adults and one child trapped beneath:

“The quick response prevented more serious outcomes.”

Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police urged calm:

“This was a joyous day shattered by this incident. We ask the public to avoid speculation and share any information via 101 or Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.”
