Maidstone Burglar Caught After DNA Slip-Up and CCTV Blunder
A brazen burglar in Maidstone left a trail of destruction – and his own DNA – behind before finally being snared by police. Lee Cuthbert, 41, smashed his way into two homes in quick succession, stealing valuables and causing serious damage.
DNA Evidence Seals His Fate
On 19 October 2019, Cuthbert targeted a property in Linton Road. He broke a window and forced open a door to get inside. His search was messy and destructive. He stole jewellery and a mobile phone. However, Cuthbert cut himself during the raid, leaving blood and DNA on the furnishings. That careless move was his downfall.
Caught on Camera at Second Break-In
Just days later, on 24 October, Cuthbert was caught on CCTV lurking outside a house in Windmill Hill, Harrietsham, with an unknown accomplice. Moments later, they smashed a window and ransacked the property. Jewellery and bank cards were taken before Cuthbert vanished.
Police Chase Ends in Jail
On 28 October, a patrolling officer spotted Cuthbert near Wallis Avenue, Maidstone. Knowing he was wanted, the officer moved to arrest him, but Cuthbert fled on foot. Two days later, police caught up with him at his Sutton Valence home. He was charged with two counts of burglary and escaping lawful custody.
At Maidstone Crown Court on 29 November, Cuthbert pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years behind bars.
Detective Constable Billie-Louise Keane said: “This man is a prolific burglar who brazenly smashed his way into his victims’ properties during the hours of daylight. The occupiers returned to find considerable damage and mess, and treasured possessions stolen. It is only right that Maidstone communities are protected from this criminal by a lengthy prison sentence.”
