Man Charged After Trying to Bite and Kick Policemen in Maidstone

A man has been charged under new emergency worker protection laws after allegedly attempting to bite and kick police officers in Maidstone.

Disturbance Turns Violent at 3.30am

Kent Police were called to a property on Knightrider Street at around 3.30am on Sunday, 19 May 2019. Officers were trying to arrest a man suspected of breaching the peace when they faced threats and violent attacks.

Jack Smith Faces Assault Charges

Jack Smith, 40, from Knightrider Street, was arrested and charged with two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker. He was bailed and is set to appear at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on 21 June.

New Law Targets Attacks on Emergency Services

The Assaults on Emergency Workers Act 2018, which came into effect last November, creates a specific offence for assaults against police, paramedics, nurses, and other emergency workers. It also hands judges tougher sentencing powers to crack down on offenders.
