Maidstone Man Caged for Brutal Strangulation Attack

Ashley Southgate, 57, from Maidstone, is behind bars for 15 months after viciously strangling a woman he knew — not once, but multiple times.

Repeated Abuse Left Victim Isolated and Scared

The terrifying attacks happened on February 17, 2024, at a home where Southgate subjected his victim to relentless violence and cruel emotional abuse. Two days later, he verbally abused and assaulted her again, pushing her further into isolation from family and friends.

Justice Served at Maidstone Crown Court

Following the brave victim’s report to police, Southgate was arrested at his home on February 24. He later pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation and common assault at Maidstone Crown Court. On Wednesday, September 11, he was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

Detective Constable Jennifer Mitchell said: “Southgate subjected this woman to a terrifying and prolonged ordeal, leaving her isolated and in fear. Assaults like this cause physical injury and long-lasting psychological damage.”

Kent Police is determined to protect women and girls wherever they are — at home, work, or out and about. We will use every power to catch violent offenders like Southgate and shield victims from repeated abuse.”
