Six Fire Engines Battle Huge Blaze at Northfleet Mill

Firefighters launched a massive operation early Monday morning after a large fire exploded at Northfleet Mill recycling site on Crete Hall Road, near Gravesend. The blaze erupted around 2:10am, sending thick smoke billowing across Gravesham and forcing warnings for locals to keep windows and doors shut.

Firefighting Efforts Ramp Up

  • Initial response dispatched three fire engines.
  • By 5:30am, six fire engines were at the scene.
  • Drones deployed to assess fire and damage from above.
  • Bulk water carriers and tug boats have joined the fight, tackling flames from the Thames.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incident at Northfleet Mill, on Crete Hall Road in Gravesend, where a large plume of smoke can be seen. Crews are working hard to extinguish the fire. Please keep windows and doors closed.”

Smoke Spreads Miles Across Gravesend

The fire’s thick black smoke is visible for miles. Sue Sharp, boat-bound near St Katherine’s Dock, spotted the fumes from 10 miles away.

“As we got closer, there was a strong chemical smell, and visibility dropped significantly,” Sue said.

Early reports suggest burning tyres and chemicals may be fueling the blaze. The exact cause is still under investigation.

Public Urged to Take Precautions

Residents near Crete Hall Road, Northfleet Industrial Estate, and the town centre are strongly advised to:

  • Keep all windows and doors firmly closed.
  • Avoid the area unless absolutely necessary.
  • Share this advice with neighbours who may lack internet access.

Kent Fire and Rescue urges anyone feeling unwell from smoke inhalation to seek medical help immediately. Emergency crews remain on site as the fire continues to be tackled.
