Malmesbury Man Banned for Dangerous Drink-Drive Crash

Simon Wright Sentenced After High-Speed Crash

Simon Wright, 43, from Parklands, Malmesbury, has been banned from driving for two years. The Swindon Crown Court handed down the sentence after Wright pleaded guilty to dangerous and drink driving. He also received an 18-month suspended prison term and must complete 200 hours of unpaid work. Wright faces a £2,000 compensation payment and a £187 court surcharge.

Crash Details: Reckless Speed and Overtakes

The dramatic crash took place around 4:30 pm on March 25, 2023. Wright was behind the wheel of his Audi RS4, carrying children and a front passenger, heading from Malmesbury to Little Somerford. Exiting Priory roundabout, he sped up, overtook two cars, lost control, and skidded into oncoming traffic, colliding with another vehicle.

Injuries and Police Response

Emergency crews rushed to the scene where Wright failed a breath test. Both he and his passenger were injured, while the children suffered shock but escaped physical harm. The occupants of the other vehicle were hospitalised with minor injuries.

Police Crackdown: ‘No Excuse’ for Drink Driving

PC Luke Hobbs slammed Wright’s “selfish and mindless” behaviour. “Driving under the influence is totally unacceptable and puts everyone at huge risk,” he said. “The fact there were young children in the car makes it all the more shocking.”

Hobbs added: “Alcohol gives a false sense of confidence. Too often, drivers believe they are invincible after drinking. Thankfully, Wright will no longer be on our roads.”

This ruling supports Wiltshire Police’s new summer campaign targeting the Fatal Five driving offences. The message is clear: there’s “no excuse” for dangerous driving.
