Peeping Tom avoids jail for hiding phone in hair salon toilets to spy on women
Salon’s Toilet Spy Scandal
A 26-year-old man who secretly recorded women in hair salon toilets has dodged a prison sentence.
Nathan Lam, from Camberwell, admitted to hiding his phone under sinks in public lavatories at a busy London hair salon. Between August and September, his sneaky cameras were caught on three separate occasions, pointing directly at the toilets.
Victims Left Feeling Shocked and Violated
Women using the salons were left horrified and deeply distressed. One victim said, “This incident made me feel very uncomfortable, on edge, and violated.” Another added, “I feel unsafe and violated as I could have been recorded, and images of me could be on the internet.”
Arrest and Shocking Confession
Police swooped on Lam’s home on September 4 and seized three phones. He confessed to planting them in toiletry areas, claiming it was a desperate cry for help due to mental health struggles. Lam believed prison was the only way to get the support he needed.
However, a psychological assessment found his mental health issues did not directly cause the crimes. He has no previous criminal record.
Community Sentence Instead of Jail
District Judge Briony Clarke slammed Lam’s actions as “very serious” but stopped short of sending him behind bars. Instead, Lam was hit with an 18-month community order, which includes:
- 45 days of rehabilitation activity targeting his behaviour and mental health
- 200 hours of unpaid work
Justice with Rehabilitation
The court highlighted the lasting impact on Lam’s victims, who still feel unsafe and violated. While he avoided prison, the community order aims to make sure he gets the help he needs — and prevents further harm.
