Violent Uproar at Epping Hotel Protest: Two Men Charged
Chaos erupted outside the Bell Hotel in Epping on Thursday night as a protest against using the hotel to house migrants spiralled into violence. Now, two men have been slapped with serious charges.
Man Charged with Violent Disorder and Criminal Damage
Keith Silk, 33, from Torrington Drive, Loughton, faces charges of violent disorder and criminal damage after his arrest on Saturday. He is currently held in custody and will appear before chelmsford/" title="Chelmsford" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Chelmsford Magistrates shortly.
Police deployed over 100 officers, including specialist public order units, to control the unrest and keep the peace.
Second Arrest and Additional Detainment
A second man, 65-year-old Dean Walters from Harlow, was arrested nearby on Sunday evening. He’s charged with affray following a separate assault and granted conditional bail. Walters is set to appear in court on September 24.
Another person was detained on Thursday night for failing to comply with police dispersal orders. That individual remains in custody.
Police Crackdown and Community Warning
“The events in Epping on Thursday were shocking and have no place in our neighbourhoods. We understand community concerns and support the right to peaceful protest, but we will not tolerate violence or criminality,” said Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow.
“Our officers acted impartially and decisively to keep opposing groups apart and ensure public safety. We continue to appeal for witnesses and footage from the scene.”
Ongoing Hunt for More Suspects
Essex Police confirmed the investigation is ongoing. They’re combing through CCTV, social media clips, and witness statements to track down anyone else involved in the disorder.
