Cousin Murder Shock in Bexhill
A man has been convicted of murdering his cousin at her home in Bexhill. After a detailed police investigation and tense trial at Hove Crown Court, justice was finally served.
Brutal Axe Attack at Bayencourt South
On the evening of 12 February 2025, 58-year-old Rita Lambourne was found with fatal injuries at her Bayencourt South house. Emergency services arrived swiftly but could only confirm her death.
Her 48-year-old cousin, Donald Excell of Seabourne Road, was arrested two days later. He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon in a public place.
CCTV Footage and Shocking Discovery Uncover Axe Assault
The court heard how Excell broke into Rita’s home and launched a savage axe attack that caused her deadly wounds. CCTV captured his movements before and after the assault, but he refused to speak during police interviews.
Initially, police couldn’t find the weapon or any related clothing. Months later, a rucksack discovered by teenagers near a lake north of Bexhill contained clothes, an axe sheath, and weights. A further search uncovered the axe itself.
Financial records proved Excell bought the axe and sheath years before, delivered to his own home. Forensic experts confirmed the deadly injuries matched the axe perfectly.
Guilty Verdict Delivered – Sentencing Looms
On 19 December 2025, a Hove Crown Court jury unanimously found Donald Excell guilty of both murder and weapon possession. He is due to be sentenced on 12 March 2026.
Detectives called the case deeply distressing but hailed their thorough investigation for delivering justice.
“We have held this violent offender accountable for this tragic loss,” a police spokesman said.
Rita’s family paid a heartfelt tribute, remembering her as a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. They said they want her remembered for the love she gave, not the violent way she died.
