Man Jailed for Poisoning Protected Birds in Dumfries and Galloway
A 67-year-old man has been caught red-handed for killing protected raptors and wild birds in the Stewarty area of Dumfries and Galloway. Barry Nicolle admitted to using illegal poison that killed 15 birds, including five rare red kites, close to his home.
Deadly Poison Found Near School
The dead birds were discovered within a mile of Nicolle’s property, some just a few hundred yards away — alarmingly close to a primary school. The reckless use of toxin not only wiped out wildlife but also posed a serious risk to the public handling the poisoned creatures.
Police Warn: Wildlife Crime Will Not Be Tolerated
“Police Scotland and our partners take wildlife crime very seriously. This conviction sends a clear message: anyone caught poisoning protected birds will be thoroughly investigated,” said a police spokesperson.
The police also thanked members of the public for providing crucial information that helped crack the case. They urged anyone who finds a protected dead bird or suspects wildlife crime to report it immediately via 101.
Sentencing Set for May
Barry Nicolle will face sentencing on Friday, 19 May 2023. This case highlights the ongoing fight against wildlife crime and the risks it poses to both animals and communities.
