Courage Ekhator jailed for vicious attacks on girlfriend
Courage Ekhator, 33, broke down in tears as he was sentenced to two years and two months behind bars for a brutal campaign of violence against his girlfriend. The former Etfield Road resident faced Woolwich Crown Court on Monday, April 22, where the judge slammed his actions as “terrifying” and “unacceptable.”
Brutal attacks and chilling threats
The court heard how, during a Summer 2022 booze-fuelled row, Ekhator launched a savage assault. He repeatedly punched his partner, leaving her battered with bruises all over her body. At one point, he even held a knife to stop her from escaping and getting help.
This wasn’t a one-off. Just days earlier, Ekhator had tripped her up, injuring her elbow. Then came a string of chilling phone calls threatening to kill her with a knife. Horrifyingly, he also threatened to rape her mother and set her caravan on fire.
From denial to break down
Ekhator tried to shift blame, claiming his girlfriend attacked him first. But he later admitted she did no such thing. “I’m incredibly embarrassed and sorry,” he said, falling apart as the judge handed down the sentence.
Justice served behind bars
Judge Ben Gumpert KC did not hold back. He highlighted the severity of the violence and sentenced Ekhator to 26 months in prison. The judge stressed that such appalling abuse demands firm accountability.
As Ekhator was led away, his tears and screams of “I cannot do it” revealed the crushing weight of facing the consequences. This case is a stark reminder of the devastating toll domestic abuse takes on victims and families alike.
