Tragic Death: 84-Year-Old Man Mauled to Death by XL Bully Dog in Warrington

Brutal Attack on Pensioner

An 84-year-old man died after a savage attack by an XL Bully dog on February 24 in Warrington, Cheshire. The elderly victim was dragged into a garden and mauled while walking home along Bardsley Avenue.

Police Shoot Dogs After Deadly Assault

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the XL Bully escaped and launched the vicious attack. Armed police shot the aggressive dog dead at the scene. A second XL Bully was also shot 19 times before being subdued. A third smaller dog was seized from the property.

The victim was rushed to Aintree Hospital in Liverpool with life-threatening injuries. He fought for over a month but tragically died on March 30.

Official Statement and Investigation

Detective Inspector Simon Mills said: “This was a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the victim at this difficult time. The victim fought so hard since the attack, but sadly his injuries were too much. Nobody should have to go through what they have experienced. Our specialist officers are providing them with the support they need at this truly awful time.”

A 30-year-old Warrington man has been charged with owning a dangerously out-of-control dog causing serious injury. He also faces charges related to keeping XL Bully dogs in breach of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. The Crown Prosecution Service is reviewing the case following the victim’s death and may upgrade the charges.

Controversy Over XL Bullies Continues

This grim episode has reignited fears over XL Bully dogs, which were banned in 2023 after a string of fatal attacks by the breed. Between 2020 and 2023, 23 people died from XL Bully attacks.

Under current law, XL Bullies must be muzzled and kept on a lead in public at all times. Breeding, selling, advertising, gifting, abandoning, or letting them stray is illegal.

The victim’s family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers as investigations continue.

This tragic death starkly highlights the dangers posed by these banned breeds and the urgent need for strict enforcement to protect the public. Readers can expect more updates as the legal case unfolds.
