Man Stabs Old Mate Over Debt in Shocking Chatham Attack
Argument Ends in Violent Stabbing
James Coffield, 40, from Albany Road, Gillingham, saw his former mate walking down Upbury Way, Chatham, and accused him of owing money for a car. Tempers flared fast. The pair clashed before Coffield pulled a screwdriver and stabbed the victim three times—in the shoulder, arm, and chest.
Coffield Flees After Brutal Assault
The attack happened around 8 a.m. on October 13, 2018. Coffield then fled the scene, leaving the man—his friend of over 20 years—seriously injured and in need of medical care.
Jail Time and Restraining Order for Coffield
Police arrested Coffield on October 20, 2018, charging him with Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent. On January 12, 2023, Maidstone Crown Court sentenced him to nearly four years behind bars. He was also slapped with a restraining order and ordered to pay court costs.
Investigator Condemns ‘Senseless Attack’
“This was an opportunistic assault in which Coffield inflicted serious injuries on a man he knew,” said officer Nick Gellett. “It was a senseless attack over a minor financial dispute, and it’s only by luck that the injuries weren’t worse.”
“I want to thank the victim for his bravery in backing this case and facing Coffield in court. Without his support, justice might never have been served against Coffield’s despicable actions.”
