A 23-year-old man has admitted murdering 89-year-old Dorothy Woolmer in her Tottenham home. Reece Dempster, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey on 5 February to the horrific killing that shocked the community in August 2019.

Gruesome Attack on Vulnerable Pensioner

Dempster also pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault by penetration and burglary. He faces sentencing on 6 February.

Dorothy, known as Dot to her friends, was a fiercely independent woman living alone since her husband’s death. She had lived on Waltheof Gardens, N17 for many years and kept significant cash at home after her weekly shopping trips.

In July 2019, Dot mentioned to her sister that a man had done some gardening work at her house. Witnesses later saw Dempster cutting her hedge.

On 3 August, Dot spoke on the phone with her best friend, unaware it would be the last time.

Horrifying Discovery and Forensic Evidence

The next day, when Dot failed to answer her door, concerned friends used a spare key to enter and found her dead, badly assaulted in her bedroom. The post-mortem revealed brutal head injuries, multiple facial fractures, a broken thigh, and violent sexual assault, inflicted with a 40cm truncheon found beside her.

Police found the back garden gate forced open and the kitchen door ajar. No signs of forced entry suggested Dempster used a stolen key taken during his “gardening” visit.

DNA and fingerprints, some bloody, overwhelmingly linked Dempster to the crime scene and the weapon. CCTV showed him repeatedly passing Dot’s home the day after the attack, carrying suspected stolen goods.

Suspect’s Own Words and Police Response

Before his arrest, a witness reported Dempster admitting he’d been drinking gin and smoking crack before the robbery and said:

“I went to rob a house. I think I hurt someone.”

“I turned a light on and there was blood everywhere. And then I ran.”

“I only got a hundred quid – it wasn’t even worth it.”

He was arrested on 5 August 2019 and charged two days later.

Detective Inspector Garry Moncrieff described the case as “one of the most disturbing” he has ever seen, condemning the savage attack on the “lone and vulnerable” pensioner.

Family Plea for Justice and Privacy

Dot’s family paid tribute to her vibrant spirit and strong independence. They expressed deep heartbreak over her “cruel” death and called for a severe sentence to keep others safe.

“Dot was a wonderful, full of life, beautiful woman. Family was everything to her and she was everything to us,” they said.

“We ask that you respect this difficult time for us and allow us to grieve as a family, together.”

A chilling reminder of the dangers faced by the elderly and the grim cost of one man’s depravity.
