Knife Threat Horror at Brighton Hospital
Joshua Byrne, 32, caused chaos at the Royal Sussex County Hospital’s A&E after waving a knife and threatening staff and patients. The terrifying spree escalated when Byrne lunged at a security guard and snatched a patient’s mobile phone to threaten a nurse with the blade.
Swift Police Response Saves the Day
Thanks to the quick actions of hospital security and officers PC Greg Devlin and PC Max Setra from the Roads Policing Unit, Byrne was tasered and subdued without anyone getting seriously hurt. The court heard the hospital staff showed incredible bravery, keeping everyone safe during the frightening ordeal.
Five Years Behind Bars for Knife-Wielding Byrne
Byrne, unemployed and from Hove, pleaded guilty to attempted grievous bodily harm with intent and affray. He was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court to five years in prison, plus a three-year extended licence period. Judge Christine Laing KC praised the hospital team and police for their professionalism.
Police Warn of Rising Knife Crime Fears
Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Rachel Carr said: “The staff’s professional actions ensured vulnerable patients were protected. Byrne’s reckless behaviour risked everyone’s safety. We are glad this dangerous individual has now been brought to justice.”
Chief Inspector Simon Yates, Sussex Police lead on knife crime, added: “Public fear is rising due to media reports, pushing some to arm themselves. Officers frequently face weapons bought online with minimal checks. We know carrying knives increases the risk of becoming a victim. Sussex Police are committed to tackling knife crime, educating the public, and keeping our communities safe.”
