Son Jailed for 18 Years for Brutally Killing Father and Hiding Body in Cardboard Box
Grim Discovery Behind Shared Flat
Thomas Sykes, 41, was locked up for 18 years and seven months after murdering his 67-year-old dad, Tony Sykes, in a savage attack that stunned Tamworth locals. The chilling crime unfolded on 19 August 2022 when neighbours raised the alarm after not seeing Tony for days.
Police grew suspicious of Thomas at their shared flat. A search of the garden uncovered Tony’s body hidden inside a cardboard box behind a shed. Nearby, officers found a fresh, grave-sized hole and gardening tools — evidence Thomas had planned to bury his dad.
Bloodstains were discovered on the bedroom carpet and cabinet. Two blood-soaked carpet sections had been cut out and dumped inside a black bin bag hidden in a wheelie bin. A post-mortem revealed Tony suffered brutal head and facial injuries and had been dead for days.
Denial Falls Flat at Trial
Despite the mountain of forensic evidence, Thomas claimed he found his father already dead and panicked, hiding the body while planning a burial. The jury saw through his story and found him guilty of murder after a two-week trial.
Shockingly, the court heard Thomas used Tony’s bank card after the killing. He has been remanded to serve his sentence immediately, with no parole possibility for over 12 years.
