Canterbury Man Jailed for Elaborate £93,500 Mercedes Fraud

A cunning scam to swipe a luxury Mercedes Benz has landed a Canterbury man behind bars for over three years.

Fake Identity and Paperwork

In December 2016, Ozgur Gun sent a letter to the DVLA under a false name, claiming he’d bought a £93,500 Mercedes parked in London. Though the DVLA contacted the original owner, he had sadly passed away just before the fraud attempt. With no reply, the DVLA sent a new V5C registration document to Gun, enabling him to pose as the car’s legal owner.

Sham Towing and Arrest

Using his fake identity, 41-year-old Gun arranged to have the car towed from London to a Canterbury garage, claiming he lost the keys. He planned to use the new paperwork and set of keys to steal the vehicle. But kent-police/" title="Kent Police" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Kent Police were one step ahead. When Gun showed up at the garage, officers were waiting to arrest him.

Callous Fraudster Gets His Sentence

At Canterbury Crown Court, Gun admitted guilt but bizarrely insisted the deceased owner owed him money and he was just collecting payment. The court dismissed his excuses.

On 3 December 2019, Gun was sentenced to three years and three months in prison.

“Nothing Ozgur Gun has done has been genuine, from his fake name to his claims about the victim, so I am glad the court saw him for what he is, which is a callous fraudster,” said Kent Police investigator Keith Rochford.

“Let us not forget, the victim’s family have had to deal with not only the grief of losing someone dear to them, but also the selfish and greedy actions of Gun. I thank them for their support during the investigation and court case and my thoughts are with them.”
