Piran Ditta Khan, 75, has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in the armed robbery that claimed the life of PC Sharon Beshenivsky. Khan fled the UK after the 2005 hit but was extradited from Pakistan last year. He was found guilty of murder at Leeds Crown Court.
Tragic Shooting on PC Beshenivsky’s Daughter’s Birthday
PC Sharon Beshenivsky, a devoted 38-year-old mother of three, was shot dead responding to a raid at Universal Express travel agents in bradford/" title="Bradford" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Bradford on November 18, 2005 — the very day her daughter Lydia turned four. Her colleague, PC Teresa Milburn, was also shot but survived.
Cold-Blooded Plot and Khan’s Role
Khan was 57 when the robbery took place. He denied knowing about the plan or weapons. Prosecutors, however, revealed he masterminded the raid, giving orders to the gang. Though Khan stayed in a lookout car, the court ruled he was “as guilty as if he had pulled the trigger himself.”
“The defendant was present, waiting nearby, and was instrumental in giving instructions to enter the premises and carry out the intended robbery. He knew they would be armed and shared the intention to shoot anyone obstructing them,” said prosecutor Robert Smith KC.
Family Heartbreak & Justice Finally Served
PC Beshenivsky’s daughter Lydia shared her pain: “I have little memory of my mum. She went to work that day and never came home. She was a hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice.”
Her husband Paul Beshenivsky added, “Sharon died in the most brutal and callous way. She should have come home after a shift she loved. We are all so proud of her.”
Judge Mr Justice Hillard handed down the life sentence, stressing no punishment could reverse the tragedy. Khan will spend the rest of his days behind bars, closing the 19-year hunt for justice.
