Over 1,000 Met Police Officers Suspended or Restricted in Growing Scandal
The Metropolitan Police is facing a massive internal crisis. More than 1,000 officers are either suspended or restricted from duty, dealing a huge blow to one of the UK’s biggest forces.
Assistant Commissioner Warns of Mass Firings
Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy revealed shocking details to reporters. Around 60 officers could be sacked every month in the coming years. “There are undoubtedly hundreds within the Met we have serious concerns about,” Cundy said.
Of those sidelined, 30 are currently under misconduct proceedings, while around half are being investigated for incompetence. Disturbingly, 275 await gross misconduct hearings, many involving allegations of violence against women and girls.
Long Waits for Justice and Rising Misconduct Claims
Some officers charged with crimes won’t face trial until 2025, dragging out the process. The Met employs around 34,000 officers, with 201 suspended and 860 on restricted duty right now. Cundy pointed out: “That’s nearly the size of a small police force.”
Misconduct reports have doubled, from both the public and fellow officers. Firings for gross misconduct have shot up by 66% in the past year.
Home Secretary to Crack Down on Rogue Cops
In response, Home Secretary Suella Braverman vowed to make it easier to sack corrupt officers. New rules aim to impose a presumption of dismissal for those found guilty of gross misconduct, speeding up the process to clean up the force.
The Met’s crackdown promises a long battle ahead to restore trust and root out corruption from within.
