Met Police to Reopen Tragic Wimbledon School Crash Probe
The Metropolitan Police have announced a fresh review into the fatal car crash that killed two eight-year-old girls, Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, outside Study Prep School in Wimbledon last July.
Families Demand Justice After Early Investigation Draws Fire
The crash, which happened on the final day of the summer term, involved a 4×4 driven by Claire Freemantle. She reportedly suffered an epileptic seizure at the wheel. Families of the victims and others affected complained the original probe wasn’t thorough enough, sparking calls for a deeper review.
Despite authorities ruling out criminal charges against Ms Freemantle due to her medical condition, the families remain deeply unhappy. In a joint statement, they said: “We remain unconvinced that the Crown Prosecution Service have reached a decision based on all the facts. Justice has neither been done, nor has been seen to be done today.”
Metropolitan Police Promise Tough Review of Case
Responding to the backlash, the Met confirmed the Specialist Crime Review team will re-examine the investigation.
“Having listened to concerns from the families of both Nuria and Selena – and other parties affected – we are committed to addressing their questions,” the police said.
They insisted the initial investigation was “comprehensive” with officers working “tirelessly through every detail of the incident.”
Driver Speaks Out, Expresses Deep Regret
Claire Freemantle issued a rare public statement expressing “deepest sorrow” for the tragedy. She revealed she had lost consciousness during the crash and has “no recollection of what took place.”
The police review now hopes to bring clarity and comfort to grieving families still seeking answers more than 11 months on.
