Lorry Driver Jailed for Killing Pensioner While Texting Behind Wheel

A reckless lorry driver has been locked up for four years after running down an 84-year-old pensioner while using his mobile phone.

David Hastings Sentenced at Old Bailey

David Robert Hastings, 45, from Mitcham, was handed a four-year prison sentence at the Old Bailey on Thursday, 8 March. He pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

In addition to jail time, Hastings was disqualified from driving for five years and must pass an extended retest before getting back behind the wheel.

Fatal Crash Caught at Fault of Phone-Using Driver

The tragic incident happened on Friday, 16 December 2016, in Fulham. Hastings was driving a heavy goods vehicle near the junction of Fulham High Street and New Kings Road just after 3.30pm when the fatal collision occurred.

Traffic lights at the junction were out of order. Hastings had stopped, but while he was on a call, he began moving again and struck pensioner Thomas Goodison, who was crossing the road.

London Ambulance Service rushed to the scene, but Mr Goodison was declared dead at once.

Investigation Reveals Driver Ignored Road Safety

“This is a prime example of the consequences of using a mobile device when driving,” said Detective Constable Sejal Unadkat, who led the investigation.

“David Hastings was clearly not paying proper due care and attention while in charge of a heavy goods vehicle. He failed to notice Mr Goodison on the road, moved off, and caused fatal injuries.”

Hastings stopped immediately and was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Police say the sentence brings little comfort to Mr Goodison’s grieving family, who continue to deal with their devastating loss.
