Sussex Drink-Driving Crackdown Nets 233 Arrests
A computer engineer, a care assistant, and a carpenter are among the latest Sussex motorists caught drink-driving during a fierce winter crackdown.
Last month, Sussex Police stepped up patrols and checks as part of the national Operation Limit, resulting in a staggering 233 arrests across the county.
Sussex Police Cracking Down 24/7
Roads Policing Unit Superintendent Rachel Glenton said: “Our officers are determined to catch offenders before they cause serious harm. We patrol 24/7 every day of the year. While we can’t be everywhere, we could be anywhere.”
High-Profile Convictions Highlighted
- Joshua Taylor, 24 – Computer engineer from Horsham caught with three pints in his Porsche Cayman. Tested 51mcg vs legal 35mcg limit. Disqualified for 1 year, fined £578 plus costs.
- Aafke Bauer, 38 – Care assistant caught twice in under a month, driving while disqualified and failing to provide breath samples. Disqualified for 3 years, given 12-week suspended sentence and treatment orders.
- Thomas Gander, 30 – Carpenter who crashed into street furniture then fled scene. Tested 95mcg. Disqualified 2 years, fined £300.
- James Church, 25 – Caught driving with frosted windscreen in Burgess Hill, tested 52mcg. Disqualified 15 months, fined £400.
- Jerry Burke-Bowen, 34 – Social care assistant caught after police alerted by security staff in Hastings. Tested 91mcg. Disqualified 3 years, 120 hours unpaid work ordered.
- Jonathan Cromwell, 38 – Carpenter who tried fleeing police after speeding in Hove. Tested 60mcg. Disqualified 17 months, fined £400.
Harsh Penalties to Deter Drink-Drivers
Sussex Police will continue year-round patrols targeting drink and drug drivers willing to risk lives on the road. They are also naming convicted offenders to raise awareness and deter others.

- Minimum 12-month driving ban
- Unlimited fines
- Possible prison sentences
- Criminal records impacting employment
- Higher car insurance costs
- Travel restrictions to countries like the USA
