Sussex Drink-Driving Crackdown: Delivery Driver, Plumber & Broker Busted
A delivery driver, a plumber, and a financial stock broker are among the latest Sussex motorists slammed with drink-driving convictions in a fierce winter crackdown.
Operation Limit Nets 233 Arrests
Last month, Sussex Police hit the roads hard with enforcement patrols as part of the national Operation Limit campaign. Their efforts led to 233 drink-driving arrests across the county.
Those caught and convicted are being publicly named to scare off others tempted to get behind the wheel drunk.
“Our officers are determined to catch offenders on our roads before they cause serious harm,” said Roads Policing Unit Superintendent Rachel Glenton. “We patrol 24/7, every day of the year – these results show we could be anywhere.”
Shocking Court Cases From Sussex Roads
- Camryn Rose, 21, a delivery driver with no fixed address, crashed his white van into parked cars in Crawley after necking half a bottle of rum. Despite being nearly five times over the legal limit, he claimed he was “fine to drive” and wanted to “clear his head.” Bystanders described him as “drunk as hell” and unable to stand. Rose was banned from driving for 3 years and hit with 200 hours unpaid work plus alcohol treatment.
- Sean Taylor, 25, a Tunbridge Wells plumber, crashed into trees in East Grinstead after leaving a party. Though he claimed to have drunk only one pint, his breath test showed three times the legal alcohol limit. Taylor also tested positive for drugs and failed to provide a breath sample in custody. He was disqualified for 17 months.
- Nigel Changambi, 25, a removals operative from Crawley, was caught in Wimblehurst Road trying to hide a bottle. He tested positive for alcohol over the limit and admitted driving without a valid licence. He was banned for one year.
- Kym Debelle, 29, a gardener in Tangmere, was caught after police spotted his vehicle moving suspiciously. His roadside breath test was more than twice the limit. Debelle then refused to provide a sample in custody, saying, “I am playing a game.” He’s now banned for 3 years and ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work.
- Lenny Kerkhove, 29, a financial insurance broker from Shoreham, smashed into a building in Southwick after leaving a pub fight. His breath test was 52mcg – over the limit. Kerkhove got a 14-month ban and hefty £409 fine.
- Stephen Burden, 30, a computer engineer from Brighton, got behind the wheel after drinking three pints in Chichester before Christmas. He blew nearly three times the legal limit but refused to provide a second breath sample. Burden was banned for 22 months and fined £952.
Strong Message to Drunk Drivers
The crackdown sends a clear warning: drink-driving carries serious consequences. From hefty fines and driving bans to community orders and alcohol treatment, Sussex Police are cracking down to keep the roads safe this winter.
