Monster Jailed for Rape and Sexual Assault After Victim’s Terrifying Ordeal
Abubakar Lawal’s chilling crime came to light after the victim visited his home on 15 May 2020.
Unwanted Advances Turn to Threats
Moments after she arrived, Lawal made unwanted sexual advances and ominously threatened to fetch a knife. Terrified, the victim felt forced to comply with his demands.
Public Heroes Heard Her Screams
Neighbourhood calls poured in after screams for help echoed from Lawal’s address. Kent Police swiftly arrested the 32-year-old from Darwin Avenue, who has been held on remand since.
Guilty Verdict and Lengthy Sentence
Despite his denials, Lawal was found guilty of rape, two counts of sexual assault, causing sexual activity without consent, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Woolwich Crown Court sentenced him to 8 years and 9 months behind bars on 23 March 2021.
Detective Praises Victim’s Courage
“The victim showed exceptional bravery calling for help after suffering a horrific attack,” said Detective Constable Bill Anderson, lead investigator for Kent Police.
“We’ve prioritised her care and provided specialist support throughout. Lawal is a dangerous predator who we have now brought to justice.”
“Anyone affected by sexual assault should come forward. We will listen and fight to give you the support and justice you deserve.”
