Folkestone Mourns Seven-Year-Old William Brown in Touching Funeral
Hundreds are expected to turn out in Folkestone to say goodbye to seven-year-old William Brown, who died in a suspected hit-and-run. The heartbreaking funeral promises to be a moving display of community support and heartfelt tributes.
Royal Intervention Secures Burial Site
William, lovingly known as 1 by family and friends, will be laid to rest on Saturday, January 13, at 2pm at the Church of St Mary and St Eanswythe. The church is close to his school and favourite play areas, making it a fitting final resting place.
An extraordinary royal intervention made the burial possible. The historic graveyard had been closed since 1855, and only the King could reverse the Privy Council’s closure order. William’s mother, Laura Brown, personally delivered a heartfelt letter to King Charles on Christmas Day during the Royal family’s church service at Sandringham. Soon after, the King and the Privy Council approved the family’s request.
Emotional Funeral Procession and Wake
The procession will be led by a horse and carriage dressed in the colours of William’s beloved Manchester United football team. The route passes through Sapper Row, Sandgate Esplanade, Road of Remembrance, and Tontine Street, ending at St Eanswythe Church.
The Brown family has invited the entire community to join the funeral service. With the church’s 400-person limit likely to be exceeded, the family hopes to stream the event online so everyone can pay their respects and celebrate William’s life.
Family Thanks Community and Authorities
William’s father, William Sr, thanked everyone for their overwhelming support in this difficult time. “The unity of the community shows William’s message of peace and togetherness,” he said.
The family also praised the police for their help with the procession and expressed gratitude to all who have sent messages of support.
William’s grave, close to his cherished conker tree, holds special meaning and reflects his own wishes.
The wake will take place at William’s school, St Eanswythe’s C of E Primary, where friends, family, and community members will gather to remember the young boy’s bright spirit.
Man Arrested Over Tragic Hit-and-Run
A 49-year-old man was arrested in Dymchurch almost a day after William’s death. He faces charges including causing death by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. The suspect remains on bail until March 6.
On January 13, Folkestone will unite once more to honour William Brown — a young life taken far too soon.
