Motorbike Rider Tries to Pull a Fast One After Worthing Crash – Police Catch the Cheat

Crash at Worthing Sparks Bizarre Theft Claim

A motorcyclist involved in a late-night collision in Worthing sparked confusion by claiming his bike had been stolen. The crash happened at around 11pm on February 9, when a Mercedes smashed into a Honda CBR 125 on South Farm Road.

The rider, who was with a pillion passenger, then bailed without leaving any contact details, leaving police to piece together what really went down.

Police Stun Rider with Contradictory Evidence

Officers tracked down George Argent, the registered keeper of the bike, but he denied being on the motorcycle at the time – despite bearing a visible injury and witnesses putting him right at the scene.

Witnesses even spotted Argent walking away from the crash and later identified him in a police identity parade. Still, he stuck to his story.

But the truth finally came out when police examined his phone. Messages revealed he had admitted to friends that he was indeed the rider involved in the crash.

18-Year-Old George Argent Slapped with Charges

  • Perverting the course of justice
  • Driving without due care and attention
  • Driving without valid insurance
  • Failing to stop at the scene of a collision

Argent, 18, from Tower Road, Lancing, faced Lewes Crown Court on November 8, where he pleaded guilty to all charges.

The court handed down a 22-week suspended prison sentence, ordering 120 hours unpaid work and 15 rehabilitation sessions. He was also banned from driving for a full year.

Police Praise Persistence in Prosecuting Rogue Riders

PC Thomas Van Der Wee from the Roads Policing Unit said: “Argent went to great lengths to avoid prosecution for leaving the scene. We had to verify his claims, arrange an identity parade, and analyse his phone messages.”

“This case shows we’re serious about clamping down on anti-social motorcyclists. Those who try to deceive police and courts will be caught and face justice.”
